Fan's View
"Thruxton Circuit is considered by many to be the fastest track in the UK, where 'thrills and spills' are seen regularly. It has been a favourite of drivers old and new for many decades and is based around an airfield. Thruxton is home to the BARC and has recently undergone complete track resurfacing, to make the circuit prime for many 'fastest lap records'. The infamous bridge on the start finish straight has also been substituted by an underpass, making the flow of traffic, human or motorised, into the paddock much quicker.
Thruxton is situated on the A303 between Andover and Salisbury and is approximately 1 1/2 hours from London. For those with slightly more salubrious forms of transport, the airfield is open most days, except when the racing is actually occurring. Hotel facilities can be found in Andover, Salisbury or nearby Cholderton.
The facilities are fairly standard, as is the food, if a little expensive, but you will generally find something to your taste.
The most popular place to view the races is at the Chicane. Here you can see most of the circuit on a clear day, including the uphill drag from Church, which leads up to the thrilling Chicane. This is the spot of many undertaking and out-braking manoeuvres, with the fast approach and awkward exit, many exciting, race-changing events can happen here.
For those days when the circuit hasn't been blessed with good weather, a popular place to view the races is in the Paddock Bar, although it has to be said that the views aren't that impressive.
All in all, it is an enticing circuit, situated in the picturesque Hampshire Downs, and one that, considering its speed inducing capabilities, is one calendar event not to be missed!"
